create an identity for the 2021 Ann Arbor Film Festival. The annual Ann Arbor Film Festival is aimed at film lovers both local and global who want an alternative to traditional entertainment.

concept


originally called the 16mm Film Festival, it has deep roots in experimental film making. this 2021 identity explores the relationship between film’s origins as a physical medium and its modern digital format.

deliverable


in order to visualize this juxtaposition, i wrote a tool in JavaScript using the p5.js library. this program generates typography with individual frames sourced from classic 16mm and indie films.

the final AAFF Identity System consists of a custom typeface generator, teaser trailer, poster series, kinetic digital banner for projections, and static banner for building applications.
